Wavy Zigzag: A Playful Font for Editorial Design
Sitting at my desk with a fresh cup of coffee, I was tasked with redesigning the header for a lifestyle blog called The Curious Life. The goal was to create something that felt both modern and inviting—something that would catch the eye but not overwhelm it. That’s when I stumbled upon Wavy Zigzag.
Wavy Zigzag is a display font that brings a sense of whimsy and energy to any layout. Its unique wave-like curves and zigzag edges give it a playful yet refined character. It’s not just a font—it’s a mood. With its regular and italic styles, it offers enough variety to be versatile without feeling repetitive.
A Lifestyle Blog Redesign
I first considered using Wavy Zigzag for the blog’s main title. The previous header used a standard sans serif font, which was clean but lacked personality. Wavy Zigzag, on the other hand, brought a visual rhythm that matched the blog’s tone—curious, creative, and a bit eccentric.
For the header, I paired Wavy Zigzag with a clean sans serif font for the subheading. This contrast helped establish a clear hierarchy while keeping the design balanced. The playful nature of the main title drew readers in, while the simpler font below ensured readability.
Using Wavy Zigzag in Different Layouts
Wavy Zigzag isn’t just for headers. I tested it in several other areas of the blog redesign:
- Article Titles: The font worked well as a title for feature posts. Its dynamic curves added a touch of creativity that complemented the content.
- Pull Quotes: For standout quotes within articles, I used the italic version of Wavy Zigzag. It gave the text a subtle emphasis without being too distracting.
- Section Headings: In longer posts, section headings benefited from the font’s rhythmic flow. It helped break up the content and guide the reader through the piece.
- Newsletter Graphics: When designing the blog’s monthly newsletter, I used Wavy Zigzag for the headline and call-to-action buttons. It created a cohesive look that aligned with the brand’s identity.
Readability and Practical Considerations
While Wavy Zigzag is undeniably stylish, I made sure to test its readability across different mediums. On screen, the font looked great at larger sizes, especially in headers and titles. However, I avoided using it for body text due to its decorative nature. Instead, I paired it with a readable serif or sans serif font for the main content.
For print materials, I found that Wavy Zigzag maintained its charm, though I kept the text size generous to ensure legibility. In PDF exports, the font rendered cleanly, making it ideal for digital downloads like printable guides and course materials.
When considering long-form content, I used Wavy Zigzag sparingly—mainly for chapter openers, section headers, and decorative accents. This approach kept the design engaging without compromising the reading experience.
Font Pairing and Brand Consistency
One of the most important aspects of editorial design is font pairing. Wavy Zigzag works best when balanced with a more neutral font. For example, pairing it with a classic serif font like Georgia or a modern sans serif like Helvetica Neue creates a strong visual contrast that enhances the overall design.
In the case of The Curious Life, I chose a clean sans serif for body copy and navigation menus. This combination allowed the playful nature of Wavy Zigzag to shine in headlines while maintaining a professional and easy-to-read layout.
It’s also essential to check the font’s features before using it in commercial projects. Wavy Zigzag includes multiple styles, alternates, and ligatures that can add depth to your designs. Additionally, confirming that it supports multilingual characters and comes in appropriate file formats (like OTF or TTF) ensures that it works seamlessly across platforms and devices.
Lastly, verifying the font’s licensing is crucial. If you plan to use Wavy Zigzag in paid newsletters, client publications, or downloadable products, make sure the license allows for such usage. This step helps avoid legal issues down the line.
As I finalized the redesign, I felt confident that Wavy Zigzag had transformed the blog’s visual identity. It wasn’t just about choosing a font—it was about creating an experience that resonated with readers and reflected the brand’s personality. And in that moment, I knew I had made the right choice.
